Computer systems are roughly divided into two functional areas. These are the frontend and the backend.
The backend is the administrative interface of a content management system. Information about the system control and processing can be called up and changed in the backend. Here new information is fed in before being played to users of the program in the frontend. The backend is subject to system administration and is used for content maintenance.
Other features include the management of comments and user data. A backend can be extended by plug-ins and addons. In the e-commerce area, product information is maintained in the backend, product categories are managed and order details can be viewed. The backend must be subject to high security standards, as unauthorized access to the wealth of information could cause great damage.
